Daycare Winter Clothing Policy in Regina SK — What to Send & The Outdoor Play Rule

Regina SK winters are real — and at Daisy Days Daycare, we go outside. Year-round outdoor play is part of our licensed program, including during Saskatchewan’s cold winters. Our Cold Weather Outdoor Play Policy

Daisy Days Daycare takes children outdoors unless the Environment Canada windchill is -28°C or colder. This follows Saskatchewan licensed daycare guidelines for cold weather outdoor play. Between -20°C and -28°C windchill, we go outside with appropriate layers for shorter periods. Above -20°C, full outdoor time is standard.

Why? Research consistently shows that outdoor play — even in cold weather — benefits children’s physical health, mental health, attention, and quality of sleep. Children who spend time outdoors in all weather are healthier, calmer, and better regulated than children who stay indoors all winter.

Winter Clothing Checklist for Daisy Days Daycare

Please send the following winter items to daycare, labeled with your child’s name:

• ✅ Snowsuit / one-piece winter suit (for infants and toddlers — easier for educators to put on)
• ✅ Winter jacket (for preschoolers who can help with zippers)
• ✅ Snow pants
• ✅ Winter boots (with velcro or easy-close for toddler/preschool rooms)
• ✅ Warm hat covering ears
• ✅ Neck warmer / balaclava for very cold days
• ✅ Warm mittens (not gloves — mittens are warmer and easier)
• ✅ Extra layer (fleece or wool sweater)
• ✅ Indoor shoes (removed and stored in cubby on arrival)
• ✅ Extra dry mittens (wet mittens are common — have a spare pair)

Labeling Everything

All clothing items must be labeled with your child’s name. In a room with 8 preschoolers all wearing similarly-colored navy or black snowsuits, labeling prevents lost clothing and allows educators to quickly match items to children. Iron-on labels or permanent marker on the tag are both acceptable.

Tip: Leave a Set at Daycare

Consider leaving a complete spare winter kit (hat, mittens, snow pants) in your child’s cubby at Daisy Days Daycare. This means wet or forgotten items are covered — one less morning rush item to remember.
