Medical emergencies at licensed daycare — however rare — require immediate, competent response. At Daisy Days Daycare in Regina SK, our educators are trained and prepared for medical emergencies, and our procedures are clear. Here’s what parents need to know.

First Aid Certification — A Non-Negotiable at Daisy Days Daycare

Saskatchewan licensing requires all educators working with children at licensed daycares to hold current First Aid and Pediatric CPR certification. At Daisy Days Daycare:

• All educators — not just the director — hold current certification
• Certification is renewed before expiry
• First aid kits are maintained in the facility and travel with groups on outings
• Educators are trained in pediatric First Aid specifically — techniques appropriate for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers

Emergency Response Protocol at Daisy Days Daycare

In any medical emergency:

1. The educator immediately assesses the child’s condition and calls for another staff member
2. 911 is called for any emergency involving risk to life, unconsciousness, breathing difficulty, severe allergic reaction, or serious injury
3. Appropriate first aid is administered by the certified educator while emergency services are en route
4. Another educator takes responsibility for the other children in the room
5. Parents or emergency contacts are called immediately
6. The educator remains with the child until emergency services arrive and takes over care
7. An incident report is completed and provided to the parent at pickup

Anaphylaxis and EpiPen Protocol

For children with documented severe allergies requiring EpiPen:

• Before enrollment begins: Parent provides labeled EpiPen(s) with current expiry date; physician-signed anaphylaxis action plan is filed; all room educators are trained on the child’s specific action plan
• EpiPen administration: Educators are trained to recognize anaphylaxis symptoms (sudden severe hives, throat swelling, difficulty breathing, drop in blood pressure, vomiting after allergen exposure) and administer EpiPen immediately — not after watching symptoms worsen
• After EpiPen use: 911 is called immediately after every EpiPen use, even if the child appears to be recovering — anaphylaxis can have a biphasic (second wave) response that requires emergency monitoring
• EpiPen replacement: If an EpiPen is used, parents are notified to replace it immediately — there must always be a current EpiPen at the centre while an at-risk child is enrolled

Minor Injuries — How They’re Handled

Minor injuries (small cuts, scrapes, bumps from falls) happen in every daycare setting — children move, fall, and bump into things as part of normal active play. At Daisy Days Daycare:

• Minor injuries are assessed, first aid applied (cleaning, bandaging), and the incident recorded
• Parents are notified at pickup of any head bumps, bites, or injuries to the face — always
• An incident report is completed for any injury beyond a minor scrape
• Parents can ask to be called immediately for any head injury (request this preference at enrollment)
• If ANY doubt exists about a child’s condition after an injury, parents are called and medical assessment recommended
