Daycare Room Transitions — Moving Up from Infant to Toddler to Preschool to Kindergarten

This guide walks through the transition process at each stage — what triggers a move, how we prepare your child, and what parents can do to support smooth transitions. Call 306-807-3233.

Transition 1 — Infant to Toddler Room (Around 18 Months)

The move from the infant room to the toddler room happens around 18 months, though timing depends on developmental readiness, room availability, and individual child factors. Signs your child may be ready:

• Walking confidently
• Showing interest in toddler-style activities (messy play, simple dramatic play)
• Beginning language development (10+ words, following simple instructions)
• Showing interest in other toddlers (not just parallel observation)

Daisy Days Daycare manages this transition gradually — your child visits the toddler room with their infant room educator before fully moving. We give families 2-4 weeks advance notice of the planned move date.

Transition 2 — Toddler to Preschool Room (Around Age 3)

The transition from toddler to preschool typically happens around age 3 — when your child’s toilet training is progressing and their social development is ready for the larger preschool peer group. A gradual visit process in the weeks before the move helps your child become familiar with the new educators and environment before the full transition.

Transition 3 — Preschool to Kindergarten & BASC (Age 5)

The biggest milestone: your child’s last September in the preschool room, followed by their first September in public school Kindergarten — and at Daisy Days Daycare, their continuation in BASC (before and after school care). We celebrate preschool graduating children each spring with a special recognition. The BASC transition feels familiar — same building, many familiar educators.

What Parents Can Do to Support Room Transitions

• Talk positively about the new room: “I can’t wait to see your new classroom — the big-kid room!”
• Meet the new educators in advance (arrange with 306-807-3233)
• Trust the gradual process — rushing transitions creates unnecessary anxiety
• Expect a brief regression at drop-off after a transition — normal and temporary
